On Sunday October 13th the volunteers from East Brandywine were dispatched as part of the house fire response to Essex St in Barley Sheaf Farms to assist Station 38. Initial reports were from the resident reported smoke detectors going off and a odor of something burning on the 2nd floor with a haze in the residence. The residents evacuated the house after calling 911.

Captain 38 arrived first and reported a 2 story townhouse middle of the row with nothing showing from the front of the building. Battalion 49 arrived next along with Engine 76 and Ladder 41. Crews began to investigate the cause of the odor and haze in the residence.

Engine 49-5, Engine 49-1 and Ladder 49 all responded along with Chief and Deputy 49.

Crews found the source of the odor and haze to be from burnt of wires in the heating unit. At that point Command scaled the incident back to just Thorndale units and everyone else was made clear.

We would like to note the importance of having working smoke detectors in your residence like this family did. At 6:30 in the morning on a weekend a lot of families are still sleeping and may not have realized something was burning. This family had working detectors that alerted them to the potential fire early on and prevented something worse from happening. If you would like to learn more about fire prevention please come visit us this Wednesday October 16th at the station for our open house.

EBFC responded with a total of 25 volunteers.
