Today at 2:06 PM, East Brandywine Fire Company was dispatched to assist the Wagontown Fire Company on a reported HazMat incident in the 200 block of Barons Hill Rd, West Brandywine Township.

Initial reports indicated the caller heard a loud pop and observed a propane tank smoking on the side of the residence. Due to the nature of the call, the Chester County HazMat Team was automatically dispatched along with Westwood EMS.

Engine 49-2 responded from EBFC and arrived as the first-due engine with nothing evident from the exterior. As a precaution, crews stretched a 1 3/4” handline and began investigating the reported hazard.

Squad 35 arrived shortly after, with Chief 35 assuming command.

After a thorough investigation, crews determined that the relief valve on the exterior propane tank had activated, which caused the audible pop and visible discharge. There was no leak and no further hazard present.

The HazMat Team was recalled, with the exception of Chief 15, and units began clearing the scene shortly after.
