On Tuesday June 23rd East Brandywine Fire Company volunteers responded to 14 calls during the height of a summer storm which took its toll on area.

According to Deputy Chief Joe Edwards, the "calls ranged from a reported house fire, cardiac arrest, multiple trees and wires calls, and CO alarms". According to Edwards "one of the biggest challenges faced by the Company was access to areas due to downed trees and wires".

Over the course of the next 24 hours following the storm volunteers remained busy responding to storm related emergencies. One of the responses involved the potential large scale evacuation of Freedom Village's Skilled Nursing Unit due to a generator malfunction.

Assistant Chief Vince D'Amico stated the Company made a response to Freedom Village for an electrical fire in the generator room. The complex was on a back-up generator due to power outages in the area. Unfortunately the generator was no longer operational leaving 47 skilled nursing patients without power.

Chief D'Amico stated "once it was determined the complex was without power, our personnel worked closely with Freedom Village's Administration to mitigate the emergency". D'Amico added "a plan was put in place with multiple contingency plans to best accommodate the patients, with safety being the number one priority".

East Brandywine personnel worked closely with Brandywine Hospital, Veteran's Administration Hospital and Fire Department, Wagontown Fire Company, Medic 93, the Westwood Ambulance, Chester County Radio Room, West Brandywine Township PD, and Emergency Management Team, and Township Supervisors.

Power was restored within four hours of the initial dispatch thankfully negating the need for the evacuation.
