On Monday August 1st, East Brandywine Fire Company volunteers while clearing a gas leak were dispatched to a reported appliance fire at Freedom Village. Freedom Village is a large scale senior living retirement facility whose residents range from completely independent to those who require skilled nursing. Initially Engine 76, Engine 38, and Ambulance 144 were also due on the assignment.

Upon arrival of Engine 76 crews encountered a smoke condition while exiting the stairwell on the 5th floor and reported heavy smoke coming from the apartment. Chester County Fire Radio relayed this information to Chief 49 who filled out the box. Crews from the initial arriving Companies finished extinguishing the fire while simultaneously evacuating the entire 5th floor.

Personnel from the additional Companies who responded that included Ladder 41, Ladder 8, Engine 43, Engine 35, Rescue 33, and Ambulance 41-2 and 41-3 assisted with evacuation and patient assessment. Additionally Chester County Fire Marshals were requested and FM 101 made the response.

The situation was placed under control within under an hour after arrival after all the residents were evacuated and accounted for.

The Line Officers from East Brandywine Fire Company would like to thank all the personnel on-scene today for their assistance.

Special thanks to West Brandywine Township PD and the Board of Supervisors for their support. Also thanks to the Chester County Emergency Radio for facilitating communication. And lastly Mark Walsh from Irish Eyez Photography for the pictures.
