Weekly Training Focuses on "5 Minute Drill"

March 30, 2022

For this weeks training members once again focused on the "5 minute drill". If you aren't familiar with what this is, it's when the focus is on the operations of the initial crews to arrive on scene and what they need to accomplish in the first 5 minutes of the fire after arrival.

In the past two weeks EBFC members have responded on two working fires assisting our mutual aid departments where our Engine was the second arriving piece and had to put these skills to the test. This is why we practice the 5 minute drill so often.

The first in Engine will be responsible for Apparatus Placement, First in Report, 360 & Size up of the scene, Stretching the appropriate handlines, Gaining access to the residence and obtaining a water supply.

While they are working on that the first arriving Ladder will be responsible for Apparatus Placement, placing ladders around all sides of the building, primary search for any trapped occupants, ventilation of the structure and securing utilities.

Now that the construction of our new building is approaching the end stages and the weather is beginning to get better we have access to our training containers in the back of the firehouse again.

Last night we had over 20 members attend training with a good mix between more senior members and junior members. Crews utilized Engine 49-2 and Ladder 49 and performed multiple evolutions working strictly on the 5 minute drill. The first 5 minutes of a fire can determine the outcome of a fire and the members at 49 are dedicated to practicing this skill to make sure we are as proficient as possible when the time comes.

Thank you to Ron Miller for the photos
