| On Wednesday evening, members of the East Brandywine Fire Company gathered at the station for our weekly training night. For this week’s drill, firefighters were divided into Engine and Ladder Company assignments and were “dispatched” to a simulated reported house fire.
One of the advantages our company has is a dedicated training area located behind the firehouse. This space allows us to safely simulate real-world scenarios and practice the critical skills needed on emergency incidents. For this training evolution, the area was utilized as the “house” involved in the scenario.
Crews focused on the 5-Minute Drill, which emphasizes the critical actions that must occur within the first five minutes of arriving at a structure fire. During these initial moments, crews worked on establishing a positive water supply, deploying an attack line, initiating primary searches, placing ground ladders around the structure, and positioning the aerial ladder while preparing roof crews to begin ventilation operations.
Members were able to run through the scenario three separate times, allowing everyone the opportunity to rotate assignments and experience different roles on the fireground. This type of hands-on repetition helps ensure that every member understands the responsibilities and coordination required between Engine and Ladder companies during a working fire.
Training like this is extremely valuable and something our company prioritizes throughout the year. The first five minutes of any incident are often the most critical and can make a significant difference in how the situation ultimately unfolds.
By continuing to train and refine these skills, our members remain prepared to respond quickly, work efficiently, and provide the highest level of service to the community we proudly protect. |
