| This past week, the Downingtown community became the center of an outpouring of respect, honor, and unity as thousands of Law Enforcement Officers from across the United States, along with Fire and EMS personnel from throughout the region, gathered to pay tribute to Corporal Timothy O’Connor Jr. of the Pennsylvania State Police. Corporal O’Connor was tragically killed in the line of duty on March 8th in West Caln Township.
A public viewing was held Tuesday evening, followed by a private funeral service on Wednesday morning, both taking place at St. Joseph Parish on Manor Avenue. The services brought together not only first responders, but also community members who came to show their unwavering support for Corporal O’Connor, his family, and his fellow Troopers.
Members of the East Brandywine Fire Company played an active role in honoring Corporal O’Connor during the funeral procession. Crews worked diligently to prepare and position a Ladder Arch on Route 322, just west of Hopewell Road, alongside Ladder 6 from West Whiteland Fire Company. As the procession passed beneath the arch, members stood along the roadway, rendering a final salute to Corporal O’Connor as he made his last journey.
In addition to ceremonial duties, EBFC members were also committed to ensuring the safety of those attending. During the procession and subsequent interment, Utility 49-1 and ATV 49 were staged in the area, working alongside several EMS and ATV units to provide rapid response in the event of any medical emergencies.
Due to the size of the procession route and the extensive road closures required, the township was effectively divided in half. As a precaution, and to ensure continuous emergency coverage for our residents, Engine 6 from West Whiteland Fire Company along with MICU 67 from West End Phoenixville were strategically staged at the Sunoco at Route 322 and Hopewell Road while the roadways were closed. This positioning allowed for rapid response to any emergencies on the affected side of the township. In addition, Glen Moore Fire Company and Lionville Fire Company were staffed and prepared to provide additional support if needed.
In the days leading up to the services, members of EBFC dedicated countless hours preparing the station after being asked by a local Trooper Mom’s Group to host a post-funeral luncheon for attending law enforcement personnel. Without hesitation, the company opened its doors and worked tirelessly to ensure the station was ready to welcome guests. Tables were arranged, food and beverage stations were organized, and the facility was prepared to accommodate the large number of attendees.
Following the services, Troopers and Officers from across the country gathered at the firehouse, where they were met with an overwhelming display of generosity. A wide variety of food and beverages—generously donated by numerous businesses throughout Chester County—was made available for all in attendance.
Throughout the event, EBFC members remained on-site, assisting the Trooper Mom’s Group with anything needed and ensuring the luncheon ran smoothly. Their efforts helped provide a space for fellowship, reflection, and support during an incredibly difficult time.
