Our Fire Prevention School Visits continued today as members of the East Brandywine Fire Company made their way to Reeceville Elementary School!
Our crews spent time with the students discussing fire prevention, fire safety, and the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency.
Of course, we couldn’t make the trip without bringing along one of our favorite members of the Fire Prevention Team — Axe, our inflatable firefighter! 👨‍🚒
Axe has been having a great time visiting all the schools, meeting the students, and sharing his Charging Superpowers! ⚡
As a reminder, this year’s Fire Prevention theme is:
⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety. Safe Charging is a Superpower!” ⚡
Yesterday, Axe shared some important tips about using the correct chargers, charging devices on hard surfaces, and unplugging devices once they’re fully charged.
Today, Axe has even MORE Charging Superpowers he wants everyone to know!
🔥 SUPERPOWER #4 — KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS!
When charging your phone, tablet, laptop, or any other battery-powered device, pay attention to what your device is telling you!
⚠️ If your device or battery:
🔋 Feels unusually hot
👃 Has a strange smell
💥 Makes popping or unusual noises
📱 Changes shape, swells, or changes color
STOP USING AND CHARGING IT IMMEDIATELY!
A damaged lithium-ion battery can overheat and start a fire. If you notice these warning signs, stop using the device, disconnect the charger if it’s safe to do so, and tell an adult. If the battery is smoking or showing signs of fire, move away and call 911.
⚡ SUPERPOWER #5 — CHARGE BIGGER BATTERIES SAFELY!
Do you have battery-powered tools at home? Maybe someone in your family has an E-Bike or electric scooter?
These devices use larger batteries that store a significant amount of energy. If one of these batteries fails, a fire can develop and spread very quickly!
Axe wants everyone to remember:
🔌 Whenever possible, charge these devices in a safe, dry outdoor location using equipment approved for outdoor use and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
🚪 Never charge E-Bikes, scooters, or other large batteries where they could block a doorway, hallway, or emergency exit.
🔥 Keep batteries and chargers away from anything that can catch fire.
🔋 Always use the manufacturer-approved battery and charger.
Remember, being a Charging Superhero means knowing how to prevent a fire BEFORE it starts! 💪⚡
Axe says he still has more Charging Superpowers to share, so be sure to check back as our firefighters continue visiting local schools throughout Fire Prevention Month!
