Training: Hoseline Operations at Newly Acquired Building

By East Brandywine Fire Company
August 29, 2013

On the evening of Wednesday, August 28th, nearly thirty active crew members gathered at the station for scheduled weekly training. The fire company has recently acquired a building from the Delaware County Community College for the sole use of fire ground training.

Lt. Greg Pilotti was in charge of training the past two weeks. The previous week, crews trained on deploying hand lines off Engine 49-5 and reviewed the basics of deploying bumper lines and cross lays. This week, crews practiced deploying a 2 and ½ inch leader line, adding a gated Y, and then deploying inch and ¾ lines from the gated Y, into the building.

The basic objectives of the interior crew were:

Efficiently advance the hose line into the building without getting the line snagged
Communicate amongst the crew and with operations
Find the fire room
Extinguish the fire
Execute hydraulic ventilation

While interior crews were practicing advancing hose lines, the exterior crews secured the utilities and deployed ground ladders. Additionally, drivers were able to spend some time flowing water on the engine and operating the main on the ladder truck.

All in all, it was another successful training night. Everyone went home having learned something new.

East Brandywine Fire Company would like to thank Delaware County Community College for allowing the use of their building.

Units: Engine 49-5, Engine 49-1, Ladder 49, Utility 49, Command 49
