EBFC Visits Brandywine Wallace Elementary

By Lieutenant Marc Crusemire
October 6, 2008

East Brandywine Fire Company made their annual visit today to Brandywine Wallace Elementary School to talk to the students and teachers about fire prevention and safety. East Brandywine Township Manager, Scott Piersol, put on his Fire Marshal hat as he made presentations throughout the day.

While Piersol spoke with the kids during their scheduled assemblies, EBFC members introduced their latest addition to their fire prevention program. Freddie the Fire Truck rolled through the hallways and into the classrooms, interacting with the students and teachers. Freddie spoke with the kids about the importance of smoke detectors and having an escape plan.

Freddie worked with the younger children on calling 9-1-1, playing with matches and Stop, Drop and Roll. Freddie and firefighter John Edwards spoke with the older classes about the unfortunate tragedy in Coatesville last month where three children lost their lives in a fire. Edwards emphasized the importance of an escape plan and the devastation that fire can cause.

Ladder 49 was on display with the 75' main extended above the playground. For the second year in a row, Mrs. Cain climbed all the way to the end of the ladder to the cheers of the fifth grade. Not to be outdone, Principal Norma Jean Welsh made her way up Ladder 49. Although Mrs. Welsh didn't quite make it to the top, EBFC gives her an A for effort.

Throughout the day Freddie made sure to invite students and their parents to the EBFC Fire Prevention Open House on Wednesday October 8th . The open house begins at 6:30 p.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m. Freddie promised the kids that he will be there on Wednesday.
