| Friendship Elementary School played host today to firefighters from East Brandywine Fire Company. EBFC was at the school to educate students in grades k-2 about fire safety.
East Brandywine Township Fire Marshal, Scott Piersol, spoke with each grade about different topics. Piersol introduced the "friendly fireman" and Stop, Drop and Roll to the kindergarten class. The "friendly fireman" allows children to get a first hand look at a firefighter putting on their turnout gear and SCBA. The fireman crawls on the ground with the kids to allow them to see and hear an actual firefighter.
Piersol spoke with the first grade about the importance of not playing with matches. Second grade had the opportunity to learn about volunteers and the role they play in the community.
Freddie the Fire Truck made an appearance at the end of each program to reinforce Piersol's messages to the children. Freddie answered questions from the kids ranging from fire prevention to the different types of apparatus at EBFC. Freddie asked the teachers if they know what firefighters use to put out fires. The kids roared with laughter when their teachers said "water", only to be sprayed by Freddie.
Each presentation ended with a tour of Ladder 49 provided by Chief Bob Zynn. |
